Ha escrito César Aira: «Roussel es un autor tan necesario a mi idea de la literatura, y tan extendida la ignorancia respecto de él, que se me ha hecho habitual sentir que no puedo empezar siquiera a hablar de literatura si antes no pongo en antecedentes a mi interlocutor».
Este interés, esta convergencia de Aira con el escritor francés y, en particular, su defensa de las claves compositivas de Raymond Roussel, es lo que sirve como arranque de este libro para aproximarse a esos dos grandes autores, a la importancia que puedan tener los procedimientos aleatorios o constrictivos de composición para superar el psicologismo y otras tristezas autobiográficas.
César Aira y la silla de Gaspard traza un recorrido abierto, completamente libre, en torno a algunas de las innumerables obras de Aira, a esas confl uencias del argentino con el genial autor de El doble y Locus Solus.
No hay, por tanto, en estas páginas intención teórica, ni afán demostrativo alguno, sino ligeras glosas, meras impresiones de alguien que disfruta con la lectura de dos escritores excepcionales.
Por lo demás, el texto de Moisés Mori improvisa personajes inventados y otros elementos de ficción, añade y cruza así una segunda línea expositiva que opera tal vez como contrapunto de esos comentarios a propósito de Aira y Roussel. Pues no es este un libro de crítica docta, sino un tiento, una prueba, un ensayo de literatura.

Esa labor de poda, muy prudente y calculada, dedica especial atención a la limpieza de los puntos de sutura de los párrafos eliminados, para que su ausencia no se advierta en una lectura convencional. Esto incluye la renumeración y refundición de algunos capítulos, que en su mayor parte conservan el título del episodio original al que pertenecen. En cada caso se han procurado respetar al máximo la integridad del texto, los episodios fundamentales, el tono y la estructura general de la obra. Todo ello convierte esta edición en una eficaz herramienta docente, y también en un texto de fácil acceso para toda clase de lectores.
